Paul J. Zinke was born in Los Angeles, California, on November 10, 1920. He studied forestry and soil science at the University
of California, Berkeley and joined the faculty at the School of Forestry in 1957. In addition to teaching he studied and mapped
soil-vegetation types in California, the American West, and internationally, including Brazil and Thailand. He remained active
in the field after he retired in 1992. Zinke died on August 18, 2006 in Oakland, California.
